An appeal to you, dear [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]

Hi Reader,

“Beeeeeeeep. We interrupt the regularly scheduled email in order to share with you some important issues that affect your TV and movie-watching habits."

It’s been a few weeks since I communicated with you, ever since my two-part article about giving yourself permission to say "NO" when presented with an opportunity you’re not ready for at the moment.

There are circumstances at play this summer that feel very much larger than life--things like the intense heat we've dealt with in addition to the emotional stuff that happens between the end of July and mid-August for me, like an anniversary and birthdays while remembering those we lost.

There's more on top of all of this, which I'll tell you about below. Suffice it to say, this email is a definite departure from the norm and I'll get back on track in the next one.

Since the spring, it’s been a critical time for writers and actors around the country and the world. I am referring, of course, to the Writers Guild of America (WGA)--on strike since May--and SAG-AFTRA (the union for film and TV performers, of which I am a member)--on strike since July.

Both groups are striking because wages and working conditions have not kept up with seismic changes in the industry, including the rising use of artificial intelligence. I won’t go into huge detail here, but you can click the links above if you want to know more.

These issues are very important to me because I'm not just a resume writer and career coach.

I became a union actor in 2002, joining AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) first, then a year later joining SAG (Screen Actors Guild). The two later merged to become SAG-AFTRA. I finally becoming eligible for AEA (Actors Equity Association - the theatre union) membership in 2007. In the middle of all of this professional activity, I've had jobs on Wall Street, in nonprofits of all types, as a recruiter, in sales, and more--all to support myself and be able to keep acting. And right now, even such massive efforts as mine won't be enough for many union members to keep going.

So my point is, if you can spare a few hours, won't you come and picket with us, the striking actors and writers?

Or donate to relief efforts?

  • The SAG-AFTRA Foundation operates an Emergency Assistance Program for SAG-AFTRA members. Details about program, eligibility guidelines, FAQs, and a link to apply are HERE or on the Foundation's website.
  • The Entertainment Community Fund’s Emergency Assistance Program provides temporary financial assistance to entertainment industry workers with documented financial need.
  • MPTF (Motion Picture & Television Fund) offers needs-based temporary financial assistance to qualified industry members.

And guess what? You can also buy strike swag here and here.

So, that's my appeal. Whatever you do or don't do, I hope you’re having an amazing summer and are looking forward to a fabulous fall. Halloween candy is already in stores, so YIKES! No pressure, right?

Thanks for reading. I appreciate you very much.

xo,
Gladys

Cast list and actor images for La Paloma Prisoner production - color photos on black background with a gold key

Hello, friends - I know it's been a minute and I'll get back to you on that another time. Right now, I wanted to make you aware of a theatre piece that I am part of in December, with performances set to run from Dec 10th -15th, 2024, right here in New York City. Information about the show is below in case you’d like to come see it. A caveat, though: it’s set in a women’s prison and has adult themes, so we recommend it for ages 16 and up. La Paloma Prisoner by Raquel Almazán is a...

It's a new year, Reader, and I wish you happiness and health for the entire year. But I have to admit that I write this with great sadness because on January 3rd my god-brother (godson to my parents) Jose Juan Colon, someone who was a big brother to me, passed away less than two months after being diagnosed with cancer. In this new year, those of us that love Jose are now left with picking up pieces, including his mother who's lost her only son after losing her husband and best friend (my...

Hi Reader, These days with the world on fire and heartbreak everywhere, it feels stupid to write to you to say “How are you and here’s a tip for working smarter/better/happier, yadda yadda yadda.” And yet, all I see in my inbox these days are Black Friday - exhortations to make offers and sell my services, and also to buy-buy-buy. This is giving me a lot of stress. I mean, yes - I am a business owner and yes, I am a consumer, but geez-louise - enough is enough! Holidays are hard, everything’s...
