How to find time in your OVERSTUFFED days

Hi, Reader -

As January winds down I'm hearing and reading a lot of content online about "renewing" and "reviving" your Resolutions. You probably know by now that I am NOT the one to make anyone "wrong" for being human and falling off the wagon.

What I do is help you figure out why you're not doing what you say you want to do and how you can get into integrity with yourself.

Because in all honesty, not doing what you plan to do feels icky, doesn't it?

You know it and I know it!

So what is your biggest hurdle to doing what you say you want to do?

If your answer to the question above is "no time," you're not alone. None of us has time, and yet, haven't you ever heard the saying that "if you want something done, give it to a busy person?"

There are people - and you might be one of them - who get a sh*t-ton done every day, week, month and year. So the question really isn't, "how do I get more time?" It's "what are you spending your time doing?"

First comes awareness...

If you've been finding it hard to work on your own stuff (creative pursuits, exercise, meditation, etc.) because you cannot spare ONE single minute to do it, then this exercise is for you.

Ready?

Step 1 - Get a little notebook and carry it with you. Make sure to pack at least two pens, too.

Step 2 - Every day for at least one week, log your activities and the times you spend on them in the notebook.

For example, here's what a morning might look like.

Rise, make breakfast and pack lunches - 30 minutes

Get self and dog ready, walk the dog - 45 minutes

Drink coffee, check email, surf the web - 90 minutes

Check texts, click link from your friend to Tik Tok videos, lose yourself in Tik Tok videos until your stomach tells you it's lunchtime OR your boss calls you - 2 hours

Step 3 - Notice how long you take to do simple things like coffee and checking emails and texts.

If you find you're falling into rabbit holes surfing, watching videos, looking things up on Google or looking people up on LinkedIn or Facebook, then are you really sure you don't have time?

After gaining awareness, you decide.

Once you know something, you can't un-know it.

So if - or when - you figure out that you've been p*ssing your time away, it's up to you to make a decision to do things differently. Or not.

There are lots of ways to check yourself (before you wreck yourself!), namely using your planner/to-do list or alarms and timers as prompts to move on to the next task. You know best what works for you.

And do you know something? You really don't have to spend that much time on a task or practice in order get benefit from it.

So, can you take back 10 minutes from your day - for movement, meditation, creativity, visualizing, you name it?

You can. I know you can.

But you have to decide... not only to take those minutes back but to choose how you will use them.

You know, the question really isn't, "Can you?"

It's "Will you?"

Will you give yourself those precious 10 minutes to do what you say you want to do?

Will you remember why you want to do those things?

Will you honor your wishes?

I hope your answer is "YES!"

Have an awesome week, Reader!

Gladys

Hello, friends - I know it's been a minute and I'll get back to you on that another time. Right now, I wanted to make you aware of a theatre piece that I am part of in December, with performances set to run from Dec 10th -15th, 2024, right here in New York City. Information about the show is below in case you’d like to come see it. A caveat, though: it’s set in a women’s prison and has adult themes, so we recommend it for ages 16 and up. La Paloma Prisoner by Raquel Almazán is a...

It's a new year, Reader, and I wish you happiness and health for the entire year. But I have to admit that I write this with great sadness because on January 3rd my god-brother (godson to my parents) Jose Juan Colon, someone who was a big brother to me, passed away less than two months after being diagnosed with cancer. In this new year, those of us that love Jose are now left with picking up pieces, including his mother who's lost her only son after losing her husband and best friend (my...

Hi Reader, These days with the world on fire and heartbreak everywhere, it feels stupid to write to you to say “How are you and here’s a tip for working smarter/better/happier, yadda yadda yadda.” And yet, all I see in my inbox these days are Black Friday - exhortations to make offers and sell my services, and also to buy-buy-buy. This is giving me a lot of stress. I mean, yes - I am a business owner and yes, I am a consumer, but geez-louise - enough is enough! Holidays are hard, everything’s...
